By Allan Redman

You probably have encountered the term Search Engine Optimization while surfing the web at one time or another. You may have asked yourself? What the hell is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is defined as the process of increasing the number of visitors to a certain website by ranking high in the search results of a particular search engine. The main goal is to make your website rank higher in the search engine?s result so that more users will visit your website.

Most global Internet users rely heavily on search engines and directories whenever they search for information they want. In marketing your website or blog, your main concern should definitely to be ranked high in search engine results.

It has been proven that the top lists in the search result pages are those web pages frequently visited by web users. So optimize your website or blog if you want to snatch the top position of the search engine results.

Keep in mind that the traffic your website is generating is basically its life itself. Without traffic your website or blog is basically dead and useless. Naturally, when nobody is visiting your website, you won?t be able to have advertisers renting space in your website or blog. It won?t be possible then, to make money from your website.

Optimizing your website for a better ranking in search engine results can be a little tricky. You would need to realize how the search engine ranks the web pages in every search made. That is why SEO would require you to have some technical knowledge.

However, your website?s success would not be reached especially if you fail to do the basic rules of SEO. And even if you do all the necessary SEO works, you are still not guaranteed to reach your goal. Thus, it is advisable that you set realistic goals. For example, for one keyword you would aspire to get into the top 10 Google results, as oppose to being in the number one spot for 10 keywords in 5 search engine?s result s.

SEO is not considered advertising even if it helps in increasing a website?s traffic. The basic idea behind the SEO techniques is to get the number one spot because your site is relevant to a particular keyword search, not because you pay.

So if you really want to be at the top of search engine results, pay special attention to SEO and devote your time and effort to it.
